Create the next smart home sensation after taking this series of online classes

It seems like everything you own can connect to the internet these days, from fitness trackers and light bulbs to basically anything Amazon makes and even refrigerators. The Internet of Things has grown exponentially since the first smartphones were released in the 1990s, and we're getting close to the point where everything you own will be on the grid.

If you're not content with just asking Alexa to run your life and instead want to know how to build your own smart devices, Coursera is partnering with Qualcomm to offer an Internet of Things Specialization that starts on Jan. 22. Over the course of six UC San Diego online learning classes, you'll learn the history of the IoT and how to build the hardware and software you need to create your own network and devices. You will also complete a peer-reviewed capstone project and get feedback on your invention.
You can take the course at your own pace, but it's designed to be completed in about six months. Some familiarity with programming and experience with Single Board Computers is preferred (you can find coding classes on Coursera, too.) If you'd rather take individual courses instead of the whole specialty, you can do that instead, but you won't get the fancy specialization certificate.
Coursera offers a 7-day free trial on the Internet of Things Specialization or any of their thousands of courses. After that, you'll get unlimited access to the Coursera catalog for just $49 a month. They'll recommend courses based on your personal goals and you'll get official certificates to add to your LinkedIn profile.
